Facebook to Take On 3,000 New Staff – Facebook is to embark on a huge recruitment drive with the aim of hiring 3,000 new staff members tasked with helping to spot hate speech, child exploitation, and violence on the social network. “Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook — either live or in video posted later. It’s heartbreaking, and I’ve been reflecting on how we can do better for our community,” Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, said in a message on the site.

The 3,000 new people will join the 4,500 existing members of the community operations team around the world, reviewing the millions of reports the social network gets every week, Zuckerberg said. They will also be tasked with removing content that Facebook prohibits, including hate speech and child exploitation, and co-ordinating help for people who may be about to harm themselves or who are in danger from someone else.

Zuckerberg also promised to invest more in building better tools to keep Facebook safe and to make it simpler to report problems.

The moves may have been prompted by a video of a man being killed and a video of a Thai man killing his baby daughter and then himself; both of which were streamed live on Facebook last month.
